Colleton County Honors First Responders and Hospital Staff for Heroic Response to I-95 Tragedy
On July 22, 2025, tragedy struck along Interstate 95 near the 40-mile marker southbound. A severe accident claimed lives, left others critically injured, and created life-threatening conditions that demanded an immediate, coordinated emergency response.
In the face of this heartbreaking event, Colleton County’s first responders and healthcare professionals stepped forward with courage, professionalism, and compassion.
Colleton County Fire-Rescue, the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office, the South Carolina Highway Patrol, 911 dispatchers, and many other first responders acted swiftly to stabilize victims, secure the scene, control traffic, and ensure public safety in the midst of chaos. Their efforts were nothing short of extraordinary.
At the same time, our local hospital staff—including doctors, nurses, emergency department personnel, and support staff—worked tirelessly to provide lifesaving treatment, comfort, and care to those in urgent need. Their dedication ensured that victims received immediate attention and that families could find moments of hope in the midst of crisis.
Colleton County Council officially recognized these heroes with a Proclamation of Recognition, adopted on August 12, 2025. The proclamation honors not only the rapid and skilled response, but also the spirit of teamwork, unity, and service that brought together emergency services and healthcare workers in an unprecedented way.
“Let this proclamation serve as a lasting tribute to their courage, professionalism, teamwork, and dedication to saving lives and protecting our community.” — Colleton County Council
We are grateful beyond words to every firefighter, law enforcement officer, dispatcher, medical professional, and support worker who played a role in this response. In moments of crisis, it is the unwavering dedication of these individuals that holds our community together.
